📍Restaurant d’Vijff Vlieghen (The Five Flies Restaurant), Amsterdam ✨ One of my favourite places to eat in Amsterdam! Walt Disney once dined at this fairytale restaurant. 🪰 The Five Flies restaurant is steeped in history, from its 17th century interiors to the celebrities who have visited since it opened in 1939. They serve classic Dutch dishes, including a dessert in the shape of a clog! 📖 I love that you can become part of the history by signing the guest book. There used to the one Walt had signed with Alice in Wonderland characters, but our waiter told me it has been moved for safekeeping. #amsterdam #amsterdamfood #amsterdamguide #visitamsterdam #dutchfood #amsterdamrestaurant #waltdisney #disneyhistory #disneytravel #disney #vijffvlieghen #fiveflies

This became standard practice for all Disney dark rides over the years, which you can see in Walt Disney World’s Peter Pan as well as Disneyland’s Fantasyland rides. Claude Coats also oversaw the blacklight effects a few years later in the colored waterfalls of Rainbow Caverns Mine Train 🌈 A few points of clarification: The rides we have in Fantasyland now (and that I feature here) are not the originals. In 1983, Fantasyland went through an extensive remodel which demolished the original versions. However, the original rides also featured a transitional space that was lit with incandescent light before the black light scenes. Alice in Wonderland also went through a complete remodel in the 80s, and though it didn’t open until 1958, I included it here for several reasons: It was largely created by Claude Coats and it was planned to be included in opening-day Fantasyland (even as a walk-through), so I consider it in the same era as the other rides in terms of design. #disneyland #disney #imagineering #imagineer #claudecoats #disneyparks #disneysecrets #disneylandpark #disneylandcalifornia #themepark #disneyhistory #fantasyland #disneytrivia #disneyfunfacts #transitions #peterpan #mrtoad #snowwhite #aliceinwonderland #disneyrides #disneyattractions #disneynerd #disneytiktok #disneytok

I never saw the Plaza Inn the same way after learning this 🥹 No. 20 St. James Park in LA was originally built by Baroness Rosa Von Zimmerman in 1870. A 1955 press release from Disneyland explained more: “An old mansion in Los Angeles supplied part of the interior for the Delmonico-style restaurant at the Disneyland Plaza. The house was purchased and dismantled, with interior wood paneling and stained glass windows, crystal chandeliers and staircases receiving the utmost care, for most of the mansion’s features were incorporated into Disneyland’s Main Street. A stained glass ceiling which had been used on the mansion’s third floor solarium, hand-carved wood paneling, and newel posts from the mansion were prominent in the restaurant.” Emile Kuri, the imagineer who helped decorate much of Disneyland, said “Walt wanted the Plaza Inn to be absolutely the most luxurious things for the average family.” For the Plaza Inn, he scoured salvage yards and antique shops, adding an 1820 marble console table, an 1840s guilded Louis XV clock from Versaille (with matching barometer), and a 1700s French fruit wood cabinet. It has absolutely warmed my heart to see Disney offering lower ticket prices for kids here and there, even if its only for a limited time. While a visit to Disneyland is still out of reach for many, hopefully this will help some families finally be able to take their kids to Disney 🥰 #plazainn #disneyland #disneylandpark #disney #disneyhistory #waltdisney #mainstreet #disneysecrets #disneytrivia #disneystories #disneyfacts #mainstreet #mainstreetusa #walt #disneylandhistory #disneynerd #disneyfan #disneycicerone #distory #disneytiktok #disneytok #disneytiktoks

Perhaps I was too subtle 🤔 Disney, I beg you PLEASE bring this back to World Showcase in Epcot 😭😭 As much as I would like to see the omnibusses return, sadly some of them have been sold to other places and some have been shipped to other parks. Perhaps the Imagineers could come up with some new ride vehicles that represent some of the countries that would provide transportation around World Showcase. Because as much as I love strolling (and eating) around the world, Epcot is brutally large, especially on hot summer days ☀️ 😭 A few of the vehicles in the fleet of omnibusses you see here were created specifically for Epcot in 1982 based off of Bob Geers original 1956 design for the omnibus in Disneyland, while two were imported from Disneyland. Its unclear exactly when the busses stopped operating (it seems like they phased them out over time) but past the 90s they only seem to be used in Epcot for character calvacades and not guest transportation. As for the People of the World dolls… that’s a story for another day 😉 #ep#epcota#waltdisneyworldi#disneyworldi#disneyi#disneyhistoryo#worldshowcasex#extinctdisneyd#wdwp#epcotcenterp#epcotworldshowcasei#disneyentertainmenti#disneyshowi#disneyperformero#bobgurri#disneycharacterso#robinhoodi#mickeyi#mickeymouseo#goofyi#disneynerdi#disneytransportationi#disneybusm#omnibusi#disneyfani#disneytiktoki#disneytoki#disneytriviai#disneyfactsi#disneysecrets

To be fair, the flagpole is also there next to the statue, so 🤷♀️ I’ve tried to figure out exactly what that statue is from the large aerial sketch of Disneyland that Herb Ryman did in 1953, but I’ve had no luck. My best guess is it’s from either Fort Collins or Marceline, since that was what Main Street was modeled after, though its possible Herb threw in one of his own ideas since it was put together so quickly. The obelisk next to the mummy was part of the Victorian-era Egyptomania trend, when people would have mummy unwrapping parties. It was thought that they could gain wisdom and ancient secrets from these mummies, which is why you see the older gentleman next to the mummy in the graveyard of the Haunted Mansion, listening intently. However, he is hard of hearing, and the mummy can’t really tell any secrets because he’s wrapped up, which is the joke of this Marc Davis scene in the Haunted Mansion. The World of Tomorrow (now Tomorrowland) did eventually get the People Mover, a sort of variation on tbe origibal concept of guests being transported on moving walkways. We also saw that concept show back up with the (now defunct) Space Mountain moving walkways that used to be in Walt Disney World. #dis#disneylands#disneys#disneyhistorys#disneyparkss#disneylandresorts#disneyfans#disneytriviam#tomorrowlandi#aliceinwonderlands#disneyridess#disneyattractionsn#junglecruiseu#hauntedmansions#disneyfunt#retrodisneys#disneysecretss#disneyfactsa#imagineerings#disneylandconstructions#disneytiktoks#disneytoks#disneyconceptart

I’ve never seen Rise of the Resistance the same after learning this 😳 I love that some things never change when it come to Disney 😂 For Crabby, Blaine said sometimes when they are working on a scene for a ride for long time, they get bored and want to add some fun details to mix it up. Thats why the pond in the last scene of Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway has a hidden Mickey in the lilly pads and Crabby walking through the waterfall once in awhile (which was where he appeared first and then Blaine was asked to go back and add him to the rest of the scenes). When it comes to the prince’s wonky animation, Snow White animator Grim Natwick had an explanation for why it was that way: “Milt [Kahl’s] early animation was fastidiously and perfectly done, but he traced too close to the photographic tracings. What I did on one scene, I remember, when the prince was walking over to sing under the window, I suggested throwing a couple of trees in the foreground so that you wouldn’t be conscious of the walk.” Using the layered scenes of the multiplane camera, they put trees and branches over scenes with the prince (and anything else that was glaringly obvious) to make it hidden or less noticable. One significant error though happened with the true love’s first kiss scene, where the prints seem to shimmy. Well, Disney wanted to fix it, but Roy said it would cost too much, and simply said, “Let the prince shimmy.” So for many years, there was a massive error in the prince’s animation in the most important scene of this film until it was digitally repaired and fixed in 1993 (which is why you don’t see it today). #riseoftheresistance #snowwhite #mickeyandminniesrunawayrailway #imagineering #imagineers #wdi #visualeffects #disneyparks #disneyrides #disneyattractions #disneysecrets #disneyanimation #disneytrivia #disneyeasteregg #crabby #disney #disneyland #disneyworld #disneylandpark #hollywoodstudios #wdw #disneynerd #disneyhistory #disneymovies #disneytiktok #disneytok

Why does the witch even need one of these when she already has a magic mirror? 🤔 Tbh, I kind of miss the non-sensical ending to the attraction for Snow White’s Scary Adventures where you’d (almost) get crushed by a boulder and then live happily ever after 😂 they added a scene after that in the Disneyland Paris version showing Snow White and her Prince going in the clouds, but the Disneyland Anaheim version never had that until it became Snow White’s Enchanted Wish in 2021. According to Dave Caranci (manager of creative development at Imagineering), “The biggest issue that we had, and we were probably solving for is, if you remember the old attraction, the Queen's trying to push the rock down on the Dwarfs. It falls on her. She screams, gets hit by lightning, and then the show doors open as they live happily ever after, and everybody was just like, that makes no sense. What does that even mean? So obviously we had a problem.” They reorganized the ride’s storytelling from its orginal iteration (that dates back to 1955 though it was updated in 1983) to give it a true happy ending, though the boulder is gone now and substituted by some animation from the 1937 animated feature. It made sense to add in the clip of Snow,White biting the apple, because before that addition you ony saw the witch with the apple (popping out at you in a series of terrifying jump scares 😂). As Dave put it, “One key scene we were missing was her biting the apple. If you don't know the story - and a lot of young kids have not seen the movie - all you see is the witch with the apple. Well, okay, then what happened? So, we have another feature that was really important that we add.” Full disclosure - some of these clips were taken from the Disneyland Paris ride, because they still have the Snow White Scary Adventures version of this attraction. But the photos I included are all from the 1983 Disneyland version. You can see a full walk through of all the changes (in two parts) as part of out Distory w/Kate & Kirk P0dcast 🎙️ #sn#snowwhiteandthesevendwarfsn#snowwhiten#snowwhitesscaryadventuresn#snowwhitesenchantedwishn#snowwhiteridei#disneyi#disneyridesi#distoryi#disneyhistoryi#disneylandi#disneyparksm#imagineeringi#disneylandparki#disneylandcaliforniai#disneychangesi#disneynerdi#disneydetailsi#disneypropsi#disneysecretsi#disneytriviai#disneyfactsi#disneytoki#disneytiktok

Sometimes a story is just a great story 🤷♀️ Unfortunately, when it comes to Disney history, there is a lot of misinformation that sometimes finds its way into becoming accepted as truth over time, especially when it’s a heartwarming tale like this Mary Poppins origin story. The Joe Grant remembered his wife reading the book to Walt’s daughters Diane and Sharon when they came over to their house. In a ln interview with Michael Barrier on Oct. 14, 1988, Joe Grant recounted, “She used to read it to the kids. [Walt] came over one day, and we mentioned it to him. He wasn’t interested in it right away, but that’s the first time he heard of it. Mary Poppins originated with Jennie” Of course, one interview is never enough to quite trust as fact, because people sometimes misremember details or make up their own stories. That’s why Diane Disney Miller’s account is what confirms that the popular story is not true. As she told it, “Dad would hear me laughing alone in my room and come in to see what I was laughing at, and It was usually the gentle, whimsical humor of A. A. Milne’s Pooh stories.” She stated specifically that it was Winnie the Pooh that she begged her dad to make into a movie, not Mary Poppins. All that being said, I do think that, besides this historical error, the 60th anniversary tribute was lovely and I for sure cried like a baby at the Sherman Brothers tribute section. Mary Poppins will always be one of my absolute favorite Disney films of all time and I’m so glad they honored it in such a beautiful way 🥰 ##marypoppins##disney##disneymovie##waltdisney##disneyfilm##jollyholiday##disneyparks##disneystudios##disneyhistory##disneyfacts##disneysecrets##disneytrivia##joegrant##disneyland##disneynerd##disneyfan##disneymistakes##abc##disneystories##disneyfactsyoudontknow##vintagedisney##retrodisney##disneytiktok##disneytok

As I always say, Imagineers do not create in a vacuum, they are inspired by all kinds of sources 📖 It should be noted that while Marc Davis was inspired by these tales of piracy, he didn’t end up using the lives of real pirates because their ends were not terribly heroic and most definitely not family friendly 😬 That’s why you don’t see a lot of famous pirates on the original version of the attraction from 1967. Some of Marc Davis‘s first sketches of these real pirates were added later though to the walls of the queue. Marc Davis called the section with the Jolly Roger “mysterious” because “people don’t know where the heck they are and they hear ‘dead men telll no tales’. They come around this corner and there’s a skull up above and pow! All of a sudden the bottom falls out of the thing! That was really scary to people at first.” The talking skull was voiced by Imagineer X. Atencio (who also wrote the lyrics to Yo Ho, Yo Ho A Pirate’s Life for Me), but when you hear the phrase later on in the attraction in the ghostly grotto, it’s performed by Paul Frees. #pirat#piratesm#deadmentellnotalese#disneye#disneyridese#disneyparkse#disneymoviest#piratesofthecaribbean #potce#disneylande#disneyworldd#marcdavisi#imagineeringe#disneyhistorye#disneystoriese#disneyfactsse#disneytriviae#disneylandcaliforniae#disneyattractionse#disneyconceptartr#neworleanssquaree#disneynerde#disneytiktoke#disneytok

Don’t worry, she gets her revenge by coming back to haunt him 😉 Without a doubt, this safe is the most interesting thing in this queue, but it isn’t the only reference to some obscure Haunted Mansion history. Some of it is simply recycled props from the old Fastpass queue, but many items found in the new extended queue have stories of their own which we talk about extensively in our Distory with Kate & Kirk p0dcast. Captain Bartholomew Gore can be traced back to some early scripts by Ken Anderson in the late 1950s. My p0dcast co-host Kirk was the one who suggested that the fountain in the queue is alluding to Priscilla down in the well with Captain Gore above her (his “treasures” are trophy urns to the left and right.) The original well would have had 🩸 red water, and a poem scratched onto a nearby wall “ding dong dell Priscilla‘s down the well… who threw her in? The wicked Cap-a-tain”. If anyone from Imagineering ever sees this… if you could add some red lighting to the water (or even these words scratched into the wall somwhere??), that would absolutely make our distorian hearts happy for all eternity. Please and thank you. #hauntedmansion #disneyhistory #hauntedmansionqueue #disneyland #disney #disneyparks #disneysecrets #disneyfacts #disneytrivia #disneystories #disneyconceptart #imagineering #imagineers #grimgrinningghosts #disneynerd #disneyfan #disneyrides #disneyattractions #disneytiktok #disneytok #pirates #piratesofthecaribbean #disneylandsecrets #disneylandpark #disneylandcalifornia #neworleanssquare

I haven’t seen Casey the same after making this connection… it seems obvious but I didn’t put two and two together until recently 🙈 The character of Casey comes from the 1888 poem “Casey at the Bat” by Earnest Thayer, which Disney made into an animated segment of Make Mine Music in 1946. The description I included of Sleepy Hollow Refreshments came from a pre-opening 1971 cast member handbook for Liberty Square. My apologies for my wonky highlighting, I was reading it while I was on a flight that had crazy turbulence flying into Denver ✈️ As for the Hall of Presidents, there weren’t that many attractions in the Magic Kingdom when this park opened, and it had zero thrill rides. Instead, they leaned heavily on shows and slow-moving rides because they assumed that the local population was largely who they were catering to (like they did in Anaheim). Considering that the local population was more elderly, WED (Imagineering) assumed that guests wouldn’t be interested in throw rides. That’s why you see so many shows in the Magic Kingdom, like the Country Bears, the Hall of Presidents, and the Tropical Serenade (which is now is the enchanted tiki room). They did add more thrill rides later when they realize this was more of a destination park and they needed to design it as such. I always thought that was funny because they marketed Walt Disney World as the Vacation Kingdom, and their target market was the entire Eastern seaboard. There must’ve been some sort of disconnect between marketing and design 😂 #wdw #disneyworld #magickingdom #disneyhistory #vintagedisney #retrodisney #disneynerd #disneyfan #disneysecrets #disneytrivia #disneyfacts #mainstreetusa #libertysquare #caseyscorner #fantasyland #disneyparks #waltdisneyworld #disney ##disneydining#sleepyhollow #disneychristmas #disneyholidays #disneyfood #disneydrinks #disneytok #disneytiktok #pocketfam

THIS is why the giant Star Blaster is so prominently displayed out front, and why it makes sense in the broader context of Epcot and Walt Disney’s legacy 🙌 If we go back to EPCOT’s roots as progress city (Walt’s original plan before he passed), he was all about forward-thinking and optimism for the future, like the fair was in many ways (like the Carousel of Progress). The Star Blaster closely resembles aircraft on display at the fair, in almost the same manner. In this way, the Imagineers were able to honor the importance of the technology developed at the fair that revolutionized the way Disney made theme parks, as well as keeping Epcot relevant to the next generation. I think the Imagineers did a brillant job honoring the legacy of the 1964 New York World’s Fair (as well as the Universe of Energy) throughout the queue. The attraction may not be what the park was about in 1982, but the spirit of hope and optimism, Walt’s cameo, the world’s fair-inspired presentation of information, and the motto “Peace Through Understanding” makes this queue a Disney history gem for me 🥰 In case you’re wondering, this information came from a fantastic panel about the World’s Fair that I had the privilege to attend at D23, plus some extra digging of my own to uncover a few additional connections 🌐 #cosmicrewind #guardiansofthegalaxy #guardiansofthegalaxycosmicrewind #1964worldsfair #epcot #disneysecrets #disney #disneyparks #disneytrivia #disneyhistory #waltdisney #1964newyorkworldsfair #retrodisney #imagineering #disneynerd #disneyfan #marvel #disneyfacts #disneyworld #wdw #waltdisneyworld #disneytiktok #disneytok #epcotcenter #xandar

In the newest episode of @Disney Countdown Show, I brought up this fun fact to @Megan The Magical Millennial. I know many of you are enjoying your holiday movies this season, and this is one of my favorite fun facts to point out whenever someone talks about Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas. 🎄🥰 #disneyworld #randomdisneythings #mickeysonceuponachristmas #disneyhistory #thedapperdanielle #mickeymouse #disneyanimation #disneymovies #disneychristmas #disneyholidays

It all fell apart. The Chicken of the Sea pirate ship wasn’t supposed to become a memory when they remodeled Fantasyland in 1983. The first plan was to move it carefully to the end of Storybookland Canal Boats so it could continue to add whimsy delight nostalgia but when they looked closer they saw a problem. Termites. Rot. Damage. Unsalvageable. And so the Fantasyland icon that had an earmarked spot for its second life instead crumbled to pieces as heavy machinery tore it apart. A second, smaller ship was planned and then later canceled, forgotten along the way erased by lack of money, or time, or both as good intentions often are But a few items from the first were salvaged from its hull snuck away into the night and found a home on a new pirate ship indoors this time where people don’t have to grow up and wonderful thoughts can make you fly. ropes and rigging found a purpose that wasn’t what was planned but in that way what fell apart helped build something new holding together a new dream as the broken pieces of ourselves often do. -kg Note: There have been rumors for years that the lanterns and hook in the queue of Disneyland’s Peter Pan are also salvaged pieces from the Chicken of the Sea pirate ship, but I’ve never seen any evidence to confirm that. The ropes and rigging, however, were something that imagineer Tony Baxter did say in an interview were repurposed when they extended the ride and imported the Jolly Roger purate ship scene from the Walt Disney World version. #peterpan #disneyrides #disneyhistory #peterpansflight #disney #disneyparks #imagineering #disneyland #disneylandpark #disneylandcalifornia #vintagedisneyland #retrodisney #disneyattractions #disneyinspired #pirateship #1950s #disneyhistory #encouragement #disneysecrets #disneytrivia #disneyfacts #disneynerd #disneytok #disneytiktok #fantasyland
