Uncommon ≠ wrong!!! Every ER nurse can agree with me on this one…thumb IV’s ARE a legit backup when access is trash everywhere else! Of course, the thumb is not an ideal spot, BUT sometimes it IS the only form of access we can get for the time being! ➖VEIN: A branch of the cephalic vein runs over the top of the knuckle! We call this a “Hail Mary” IV site…one of three or four sites in the hands where you can always see them or they tend to be in a fixed place even if you can’t see or palpate them! ➖BUT THE THUMB??? Yes, there ARE instances where the thumb may be the chosen access point. AND THESE INSTANCES ARE MORE COMMON THAN YOU THINK! • When other IV sites are damaged (ex: IV drug users, burns, trauma) • Elderly or pediatric patients with trouble finding access elsewhere (reaallyyy secure these ones) • Dehydrated patients • Blood draw • Cardiac arrests when there is no other point of access at that very moment ➖NO-NO’s FOR: • Radiology (ex: CT angiography) • Medications hard on the vein (certain antibiotics, potassium, viscous solutions, etc.) #fyp #foryou #foryoupage #nurse #nursesoftiktok #nurselife #iv #ivtherapy
