Stop trying to make autism “trendy!” I do not personally have autism, but I have many friends who are, and they have expressed to me their feelings about how social media currently portrays autism and how unfortunate it is. I personally felt the way autism was portrayed was unhealthy, so I reached out to them for their opinions and they agreed, so I wanted to bring awareness to this. As someone with bipolar, I can relate to how toxic it can be when people misrepresent the condition in social media. Like having outbursts of anger or sudden energy means you’re “manic” or how suddenly crashing and being sad means you’re “depressive.” When you actually struggle with the real condition and have been clinically diagnosed, it’s frustrating seeing your condition being misrepresented, having people be misinformed about it, and people self-diagnosing when what they’re experiencing are traditional health troubles that can be resolved by other means. I think making jokes about our conditions can be healthy and constructive, but trying to self-diagnose from videos, taking things too literally like “autistic people are obsessed with the color green” and thinking it’s something as lighthearted as that can be harmful. It minimizes the real severity of challenges autism comes with, and it does not respect people’s real experiences.
