This is what my mornings look like as a natural builder. Getting dirty, working slowly, and creating. I felt tired waking up this morning. But work like this (adding earthen plaster to slipstraw walls) gives me energy. Creativity is a powerful medicine, and we underestimate its potential. I didn't discover my passion for building modern mud homes until I gave myself the chance beyond a 9-5 intensive schedule. It was scary and uncertain, but I did it anyway. Living off-grid didn't happen overnight. For me, it took planning, saving, living very simply for 4 years, and focusing in on what talents I have to offer. I am a former rocket scientist, turned mud home builder and nonprofit head. Don't get me wrong. I still work online during parts of the year, enough to afford my lifestyle. I had to work towards this luxury and career change and be patient for it. I would've missed out on these sweet mornings if I listened to my fears in the beginning. Little by little, I am wrapping up this natural guest home, made with only straw, clay, sand, bamboo, and lime -- a place for future students to come and learn once my online workshops become in-person. If you want to learn sooner than that, you are in luck! I have live online workshops that teach these techniques in a straightforward way, along with the science behind them and modern modifications to make them last many years. Mud homes are not all the same! There is so much variety in building modern mud homes, which incorporate modern science and research into natural building traditions from all across the world (not just Africa, even in Europe!). Modern mud homes merge sustainability with modern comforts that we expect in our living spaces. Many of us grew up a particular way, with plumbing in-house, nice appliances, even TVs. Having a mud home doesn't mean sacrificing the things that bring us comfort. It is about having those things AND living within a space that serves your health and financial freedom in the long-term. Yes, you can have it all! 😉 What are your questions on the diffs between modern mud homes and traditional mud homes? I'd love to answer! 🏠 Next workshop: April 19th, Lime Plaster 101 Online (link in bio!)
